The AFL finals format, explained

The AFL's top-8 system is built around one privilege: the double chance. Finish top four and you can lose a final and still win the flag. Finish fifth to eighth and every week is an elimination. That single design choice shapes the whole September β€” and most of August's jockeying.

Week one: two different competitions

FinalWhoLoser's fate
Qualifying Final 11st v 4thLives (home semi-final)
Qualifying Final 22nd v 3rdLives (home semi-final)
Elimination Final 15th v 8thSeason over
Elimination Final 26th v 7thSeason over
The double chance in one line: qualifying-final losers get a second life at home; elimination-final losers get the Gold Coast in October. Same weekend, entirely different stakes.

Week two: semi-finals

Both are knockouts. The qualifying-final losers get the home ground and the extra week's evidence; the elimination winners arrive battle-hardened but often travelling.

Week three: preliminary finals

The prize for winning a qualifying final is brutal in its simplicity: a week off, then a home preliminary final β€” statistically the most valuable home game in footy. Prelims are where the double chance cashes out.

Week four: the Grand Final

The two prelim winners meet at the MCG on the last Saturday in September (contractually, whatever the ladder said). One team's season ends in a premiership; twenty-one others get a draft pick and a review.

Why clubs treat fourth vs fifth as a chasm:

Simulating September

Because each final is just a game with a win probability, you can chain the bracket: simulate week one thousands of times, feed winners forward, and count how often each club reaches each stage. That's exactly what FootyAI's Premiership Predictor does with model probabilities β€” turning "we're a chance" into "we make the prelim 31% of the time, and it's 55% if we snatch fourth". The run home stops being vibes and becomes scenarios.
